Imagine opening a travel app and seeing destinations like Hogwarts, Middle-earth, Pandora, the Mushroom Kingdom, or a galaxy far, far away.
No airport security. No hotel reviews. No worrying about whether your destination has decent Wi-Fi.
Instead, you get dragons, magic, floating mountains, enchanted castles, talking animals, and places that completely ignore the laws of physics.
It raises an interesting question:
Which fictional world would actually be the most fun to vacation in?
There are plenty of amazing fictional universes, but there is an important distinction between a place that is exciting to watch and a place you would genuinely want to visit.
Because spending a week somewhere is very different from being the main character.
Here are some of the best fictional vacation destinations — and the one that might beat them all.
1. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
For pure vacation potential, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is difficult to beat.
Imagine arriving at Diagon Alley for the first time.
You could walk past magical shops, buy strange candy, drink Butterbeer, watch moving photographs, browse broomsticks, and see things happening around you that would be impossible in the real world.
Then there is Hogwarts.
Even if you were not attending the school, simply touring Hogwarts Castle would probably be one of the greatest sightseeing experiences imaginable.
There are:
- Moving staircases
- Talking portraits
- Hidden rooms
- Enormous feasts
- Magical creatures
- Quidditch matches
- Secret passageways
And if magic transportation were available to tourists, things would become even better.
Why sit through a seven-hour flight when you could potentially teleport?
The biggest downside is obvious: the Harry Potter universe can be surprisingly dangerous.
As long as your vacation happens during a peaceful period, however, it might be nearly perfect.

2. The Shire From The Lord of the Rings
Not everyone wants excitement on vacation.
Sometimes you just want food, beautiful scenery, good company, and absolutely nothing scheduled.
That is where the Shire comes in.
The home of the Hobbits might be one of the most relaxing fictional locations ever created.
Picture waking up inside a cozy Hobbit hole surrounded by green hills.
Breakfast arrives.
Then second breakfast.
Then elevenses.
Then lunch.
Then afternoon tea.
Honestly, Hobbit culture might have figured out vacationing better than we have.
There would be long walks through peaceful countryside, evenings at the Green Dragon Inn, fresh food, music, celebrations, and almost no pressure to be productive.
Of course, Middle-earth itself is extremely dangerous.
You probably do not want your travel itinerary accidentally taking you anywhere near Mordor.
But if you stayed in the Shire?
It could be incredible.

3. Pandora From Avatar
If we are talking about scenery, Pandora might win.
The world introduced in Avatar contains massive forests, glowing plants, incredible creatures, and floating mountains that look like something from a dream.
Imagine hiking through Pandora at night while the plants beneath your feet glow with every step.
It would make even the most beautiful national parks on Earth look ordinary.
Then there is the possibility of flying through Pandora’s mountains on an Ikran.
Assuming you survive the bonding process, of course.
That is the problem with Pandora.
It is beautiful, but nearly everything seems capable of killing you.
Some fictional vacations offer room service.
Pandora offers enormous predators.
Still, for adventurous travelers, few destinations could compete.

4. The Pokémon World
The Pokémon universe might secretly be the greatest vacation destination ever.
Think about how people actually live there.
You can travel between colorful cities, explore forests, visit tropical islands, watch Pokémon battles, meet hundreds of strange creatures, and seemingly wander around without worrying too much about money.
Even better, Pokémon Centres appear to provide incredibly convenient services.
You could spend your vacation discovering Pokémon that you had only seen in games or television.
Imagine seeing Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario, or Eevee in real life.
You could also attend major Pokémon tournaments like we attend sporting events.
And depending on the rules for tourists, you might even get your own starter Pokémon.
At that point, the vacation basically sells itself.
Vacation rating: 9.7/10
5. The Mushroom Kingdom
The Mushroom Kingdom feels like someone designed an entire country specifically for entertainment.
There are colorful landscapes, giant mushrooms, castles, racing, floating platforms, mysterious pipes, and ridiculous amounts of adventure.
You could race Mario Kart during the day and hang out inside Princess Peach’s castle afterward.
There is just one issue.
Bowser.
This man seems incapable of allowing the Mushroom Kingdom to experience more than a few peaceful days before causing another international incident.
If your vacation happens between kidnappings, however, it would probably be unbelievable.
Vacation rating: 9/10
6. The Star Wars Galaxy
At first, this sounds like an obvious choice.
Who would not want to visit the Star Wars universe?
You could travel between planets, see alien civilizations, visit enormous futuristic cities, explore strange worlds, and possibly even hold a lightsaber.
The tourism possibilities would be endless.
Coruscant alone could probably take weeks to explore.
Then you have places like Naboo, Cloud City, Tatooine, and countless other planets.
However, there is a major problem with vacationing in Star Wars.
There always seems to be a war.
The galaxy has an astonishing inability to remain peaceful.
Your relaxing interplanetary vacation could turn into a battle against an evil empire before lunch.
Amazing destination.
Terrible travel insurance premiums.
Vacation rating: 8/10
7. Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory
Forget spending an entire week here.
Give me one day.
A functioning version of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory would probably be one of the greatest tourist attractions ever created.
Chocolate rivers.
Edible rooms.
Impossible candy.
Experimental inventions.
Oompa Loompas.
The entire experience would feel like visiting a theme park where the normal rules of reality simply stopped applying.
The only requirement would be following instructions.
Historically, visitors to Wonka’s factory have not been particularly good at that.
Stay away from mysterious machinery and you should be fine.
Vacation rating: 8.5/10
So, Which Fictional World Would Be the Best Vacation?
The strongest contenders are probably:
The Wizarding World, the Pokémon universe, and the Shire.
The Shire would be best for relaxation.
The Wizarding World would be best for pure wonder.
But the Pokémon world might be the ultimate fictional vacation destination.
It combines adventure, beautiful locations, friendly cities, fascinating creatures, sports, exploration, and enough variety that you could spend weeks traveling without getting bored.
You could hike through forests one day, visit a futuristic city the next, relax on a tropical island, and finish your trip watching a Pokémon championship.
Most importantly, compared with many other fictional universes, the Pokémon world actually seems relatively safe for ordinary people.
That matters.
Watching superheroes battle aliens is entertaining.
Being the tourist standing underneath the collapsing skyscraper is considerably less fun.
The Real Question: Would You Actually Want Adventure?
The answer might depend on what kind of traveler you are.
Some people would immediately choose Hogwarts.
Others would spend their entire vacation eating meals in the Shire.
Adventure lovers might head straight to Pandora.
Gamers might choose the Mushroom Kingdom.
Science-fiction fans would probably risk the occasional galactic conflict just to see Star Wars technology firsthand.
And Pokémon fans?
They are already packing.
Maybe that is what makes fictional worlds so entertaining to think about.
The best fictional destinations take something we already love about traveling — discovery, adventure, food, scenery, culture — and remove the limitations of reality.
Suddenly, mountains can float.
Animals can breathe fire.
Paintings can talk.
Brooms can fly.
And your vacation photos become considerably harder for your friends to beat.
So if someone handed you a ticket tomorrow and said you could spend one week inside any fictional universe, where would you go?
Because I’m choosing the Pokémon world.
And I’m not coming home without a Pikachu.
