Taylor Swift has spent years dominating awards shows, breaking records and turning practically every nomination announcement into another headline.
But at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, someone just finished ahead of her.
Madonna.
The 2026 VMA nominations were officially revealed on August 18, and the Queen of Pop leads the entire field with an impressive 11 nominations.
Taylor Swift is right behind her with nine, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each picked up seven nominations.
And suddenly, one of the biggest awards shows of the year has turned into a fascinating battle between two generations of pop royalty.
Madonna Leads the 2026 VMA Nominations
At 11 nominations, Madonna isn’t simply having a good year.
She’s having one of the biggest VMA moments of her career.
Her nominations include several of the night’s most important categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year, along with Best Collaboration, Best Dance and multiple technical categories.
Her ambitious “Confessions II — The Film” is nominated for Video of the Year, where it will compete directly against Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.”
For an artist whose history with MTV stretches all the way back to the birth of the VMAs, the moment feels almost perfectly scripted.
Madonna’s legendary performance of “Like a Virgin” at the inaugural VMAs in 1984 helped establish the awards as a place where pop culture moments could become instant history. More than four decades later, she’s back at the center of the conversation.
Taylor Swift Could Still Make VMA History
Madonna may have won the nomination count, but Taylor Swift has an even bigger historical milestone within reach.
Swift currently has 30 career VMA wins, tying Beyoncé for the most in the show’s history.
That means Taylor doesn’t need nine victories.
She doesn’t need five.
She doesn’t even need two.
One win at the 2026 VMAs would make Taylor Swift the most-awarded artist in VMA history.
So while the nomination headline belongs to Madonna right now, the record books could belong to Swift by the end of the night.
Taylor’s nine nominations include Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Best Pop, along with several production categories including direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.
That’s what makes this matchup so interesting.
Madonna enters the ceremony with the most opportunities.
Taylor enters it with arguably the biggest record on the line.
Video of the Year Could Be the Main Event
If you’re looking for the category that could dominate the conversation, start with Video of the Year.
The 2026 nominees are:
- Ariana Grande — “hate that i made you love me”
- Bruno Mars — “I Just Might”
- GENER8ION — “STORM starring Yung Lean”
- Madonna — “Confessions II — The Film”
- Sabrina Carpenter — “Tears”
- Taylor Swift — “The Fate of Ophelia”
That’s an absolutely loaded category.
Madonna versus Taylor would already be enough to generate headlines.
Add Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Bruno Mars, and Video of the Year becomes one of the most star-packed races of the night.
Sabrina Carpenter Is Having Another Huge Year
Don’t let the Madonna-versus-Taylor storyline hide what Sabrina Carpenter just accomplished.
Carpenter earned seven nominations, tying Ariana Grande for third place among this year’s most-nominated artists.
She’s nominated for Video of the Year with “Tears” and is also competing for Artist of the Year.
But there’s an interesting twist.
Carpenter and Madonna aren’t only competitors.
They’re collaborators.
The pair’s “Bring Your Love” is nominated for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.
So Madonna and Sabrina could potentially spend part of the night competing against each other — and another part potentially celebrating together.
Awards shows love storylines.
The 2026 VMAs already have plenty.
Ariana Grande Is Right There Too
Ariana Grande also earned seven nominations, keeping her firmly inside the VMA conversation.
Grande is nominated for Video of the Year with “hate that i made you love me” and joins Madonna, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars and Morgan Wallen in the Artist of the Year race.
Behind that group, Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson each received five nominations, while LISA earned four.
This isn’t just a two-person awards show.
But there’s little question about which two names will attract the most attention heading into September.
Madonna vs. Taylor Swift Is Bigger Than One Awards Show
The interesting part isn’t simply that Madonna received two more nominations than Taylor Swift.
It’s what the matchup represents.
Madonna helped define what a global pop superstar looked like in the MTV era.
Taylor Swift helped redefine what a global superstar could become in the streaming and social-media era.
Different generations.
Different media landscapes.
Different paths to cultural dominance.
And now they’re competing directly in several of the biggest categories at the same VMA ceremony.
Calling Madonna’s 11 nominations a victory over Taylor is obviously premature — nominations aren’t wins.
But for nomination day?
Madonna absolutely owns the headline.
There’s Another Wild Record Madonna Could Reach
Taylor isn’t the only artist chasing history.
According to the Associated Press, Madonna has 19 competitive VMA victories. If she somehow swept all 11 of her categories this year, she would reach 30 competitive wins — matching Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s current mark.
A complete sweep would obviously be incredibly difficult.
But the fact that it’s mathematically possible tells you how enormous Madonna’s nomination haul really is.
More than 40 years after becoming one of the defining figures in VMA history, Madonna could potentially rewrite that history again.
When Are the 2026 VMAs?
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards take place Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony will air on CBS and MTV and stream on Paramount+ in the United States.
Fans can vote in 13 categories, with most voting scheduled to close on September 25.
And considering the fan bases involved, expect voting to get intense.
So Who Has the Advantage?
Right now?
Madonna.
Eleven nominations compared with Taylor’s nine puts her officially at the top of the 2026 field.
But September 27 could tell a completely different story.
Taylor needs only one victory to move ahead of Beyoncé and become the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Madonna has an opportunity to add another massive chapter to a relationship with MTV that has lasted more than four decades.
Meanwhile, Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter are sitting just behind them with seven nominations each, more than capable of stealing some of the night’s biggest trophies.
The nominations may have just dropped, but the storylines are already set.
Madonna vs. Taylor.
Pop’s past versus pop’s present.
And potentially a VMA record that may never look the same again.
