Spider-Man has officially entered rarefied box-office territory.

After just three weekends in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, turning Tom Holland’s latest adventure as Peter Parker into one of the biggest movies ever released.

And somehow, the $2 billion number isn’t even the craziest part.

The film has now become Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing movie of all time, overtaking Spider-Man: No Way Home — and it reached the milestone at a speed almost no movie in history has matched.

So just how massive is Brand New Day?

Here’s some perspective.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Already Made More Than $2 Billion

As of August 16, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned approximately $2.022 billion worldwide.

That includes roughly:

  • $785.8 million in North America
  • More than $1.2 billion internationally
  • Approximately $210 million from China alone

Those numbers would be extraordinary at the end of a long theatrical run.

Brand New Day got there after only three weekends.

The movie remained No. 1 at the North American box office for its third consecutive weekend, adding another estimated $70 million domestically while continuing to draw enormous crowds overseas.

And that puts the movie in an incredibly exclusive club.

Only Eight Movies Have Ever Reached $2 Billion

Think about how many blockbuster movies Hollywood has released.

Decades of Star Wars.

The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jurassic Park.

Harry Potter.

Fast & Furious.

Frozen.

The Lion King.

And yet Spider-Man: Brand New Day is only the eighth movie ever to reach $2 billion at the global box office, according to the Associated Press.

That alone would make this one of the most successful theatrical releases in history.

But Spider-Man did something else.

It got there ridiculously fast.

It Is the Second-Fastest Movie Ever to Reach $2 Billion

Brand New Day is now reportedly the second-fastest movie in history to cross $2 billion worldwide.

The only movie that reached the milestone faster?

Avengers: Endgame.

That comparison tells you almost everything you need to know.

Endgame wasn’t a normal blockbuster. It was the conclusion of more than a decade of interconnected Marvel movies and one of the most anticipated theatrical events Hollywood had ever seen.

For a solo Spider-Man movie to now be mentioned in the same conversation is remarkable.

And Brand New Day had already given us a warning that this was coming.

The movie crossed $1 billion worldwide in just six days, becoming the second-fastest film ever to reach that milestone as well.

In other words, audiences didn’t simply show up opening weekend.

They kept showing up.

It Just Beat Spider-Man: No Way Home

Perhaps the most shocking comparison is with Tom Holland’s previous Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home became a global cultural event when it arrived in 2021, powered by enormous anticipation and the return of previous Spider-Man actors and villains.

Its worldwide theatrical run ultimately reached approximately $1.92 billion.

At the time, it became Sony’s biggest movie ever.

Brand New Day has already passed it.

And again, we’re talking about a movie that’s only been in theaters for a few weeks.

That officially makes Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film ever.

Not just the biggest Spider-Man movie.

Not just the biggest Tom Holland movie.

Sony’s biggest movie. Period.

The Opening Weekend Was Ridiculous Too

There were signs from the beginning that something unusual was happening.

Brand New Day exploded out of the gate with one of the biggest opening weekends the movie industry has ever seen.

Its global debut was roughly $930 million, immediately putting the film within striking distance of $1 billion after a single weekend.

The movie also produced a historic North American launch, with estimates around $355 million to $360 million depending on final reporting and studio estimates.

That put it right alongside — and by some final estimates slightly ahead of — the domestic opening previously set by Avengers: Endgame.

Those are not normal Spider-Man numbers.

Those are Avengers-level numbers.

Why Is Brand New Day This Huge?

Spider-Man has always been one of the most recognizable fictional characters on Earth.

But recognition alone doesn’t produce $2 billion.

Several things appear to have come together perfectly.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Is Now a Generational Character

Holland first appeared as Peter Parker a decade ago, and an entire generation of moviegoers has effectively grown up alongside his version of Spider-Man.

That creates something franchises desperately want but can’t manufacture overnight: emotional investment.

Fans aren’t simply interested in seeing Spider-Man swing through New York.

They’re invested in Peter Parker.

And after the ending of No Way Home, audiences had one enormous question:

What happens to Peter now that everyone has forgotten him?

Brand New Day had an irresistible starting point.

It Gave Peter Parker a Fresh Start

One of the smartest decisions was allowing the new movie to feel like the beginning of another chapter rather than simply No Way Home 2.

Peter enters this story more isolated than ever, rebuilding his life after the events that erased his identity from the memories of the people closest to him.

That gave Brand New Day something many superhero movies struggle to find:

stakes that feel personal.

The spectacle is still there.

The villains are still there.

The Marvel connections are still there.

But underneath everything is a Peter Parker story.

And that’s historically when Spider-Man works best.

Spider-Man Is Bigger Than the “Superhero Fatigue” Conversation

For the past several years, Hollywood has repeatedly debated whether audiences were becoming tired of superhero movies.

Brand New Day may have provided the clearest answer yet.

People aren’t necessarily tired of superhero movies.

They’re tired of superhero movies they don’t care about.

Give audiences a character they love, a story they want to see and a reason to rush to a theater, and the ceiling apparently remains incredibly high.

More than $2 billion high.

What Happens Next?

The scariest part for every other movie chasing Brand New Day?

It isn’t finished.

The movie is still playing around the world and just earned another massive weekend.

At $2.022 billion, even relatively normal holds from here could continue pushing the movie higher up the all-time rankings.

Whether it can eventually challenge the very top tier occupied by movies such as Avatar and Avengers: Endgame remains to be seen.

But the fact that we’re even asking the question three weekends into its release tells you how extraordinary this run has become.

Spider-Man Just Proved He’s Still Hollywood’s Ultimate Superhero

There have been bigger cinematic universes.

There have been bigger crossover events.

There have been franchises with more movies.

But few characters have remained as consistently valuable across generations as Spider-Man.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man defined the early 2000s.

Andrew Garfield developed a passionate fanbase of his own.

And now Tom Holland’s version has delivered multiple global phenomenons.

With Brand New Day, Spider-Man has reached another level.

More than $2 billion worldwide.

Sony’s biggest movie ever.

Only the eighth $2 billion movie in history.

The second-fastest film ever to reach the milestone.

And it did all of that in three weekends.

At this point, calling Spider-Man: Brand New Day a hit almost feels like an understatement.

It’s becoming a piece of box-office history.
